Stellite 6 Material Properties

  • Ultimate wear resistance: This is the core advantage of the Stellite 6. It is dispersed with a large number of hard carbide particles, making it easily resistant to abrasive wear, adhesive wear, and fretting wear. Even in harsh conditions without lubrication, its wear resistance far exceeds that of most tool steels and stainless steels.
  • Excellent high-temperature performance: It can still maintain high hardness and strength at high temperatures, and will not soften as quickly as ordinary tool steel. It can even withstand high temperatures of 800-900°C in the short term, and has strong oxidation resistance.
  • Excellent corrosion resistance: It is extremely resistant to a variety of acids, alkali solutions, seawater, and atmospheric corrosion, and its corrosion resistance is better than most stainless steels, comparable to nickel-based alloys.
  • Impact resistance with both rigidity and flexibility: Although extremely hard, its cobalt matrix gives the material good toughness. This allows Stellite 6 to not only resist wear and tear, but also withstand certain mechanical and thermal shocks, avoiding brittle fractures like hard materials such as tungsten carbide.

Application

1. Chemical field

Stellite 6 Rod is used in the manufacture of plungers, sealing rings, impeller mouth rings, and wear liners for pumps, especially for conveying corrosive liquids or slurries containing solid particles.

 

2. Industrial sealing systems

Stellite 6 Bar is widely used in the nuclear, thermal, al and petrochemical industries for valve seats and stem seals for globe, gate, and plug valves to maintain seal reliability in corrosive media or high-temperature steam conditions.

 

3. Energy power equipment

Stellite 6 Round Bar is used to manufacture blade wear seals, combustion chamber components, and high-temperature bearings in steam and gas turbines to maintain high strength and oxidation resistance in high-temperature environments above 500°C.

 

4. Aerospace

It is used to manufacture engine components such as turbine blade tips, sealing rings, and high-temperature fasteners, as well as mechanical wear parts, to maintain structural integrity under high load impacts.

 

5. Glass manufacturing

It is used for parts that come into contact with high-temperature molten glass, such as feeds and agitators, and is resistant to erosion above 1000°C.

 

 

Processing

  • Material Pre-treatment: Verify material grade and hardness of incoming bars, inspect surface porosity and cracks, and perform stress relief aging if necessary to eliminate casting internal stress.
  • Sawing & Cutting: Adopt low-speed band saw cutting only; prohibit thermal gas cutting, and reserve sufficient single-side machining allowance.
  • Rough Turning & Milling: Use cemented carbide or CBN cutting tools, apply low spindle speed with large cutting depth for solid cutting, avoid idle tool rubbing to prevent work hardening.
  • Stress Relief Treatment: Conduct low-temperature holding stress relief after rough machining to release cutting stress and avoid deformation and cracking during finish machining.
  • Finish Turning & Milling: Strengthen rigidity of fixture and tools, machine with small allowance and low feed rate, and leave proper grinding allowance to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Drilling & Tapping: Position with a center drill first, then ream step by step; thread milling is preferred instead of tapping, operate at low speed with frequent chip removal and sufficient cutting fluid supply.
  • Grinding Process: Use green silicon carbide or CBN grinding wheels, grind at a uniform low feed rate to prevent surface burning and micro-cracks.

 

  • Final Inspection & Finishing: Remove burrs and clean workpieces, recheck dimensions and hardness, and conduct non-destructive testing on critical parts to inspect hidden processing cracks.

 

PS: Casting 6 rods: brittle, loose, more marginal, more conservative cutting

Forged 6/6B rod: good toughness, uniform structure, can appropriately increase the cutting parameters, not easy to crack
